SpiritWars® Version History

Version Number:

Description:
Version 2.2.5
(12/8/05)
This is primarily a maintenance release  that fixed two small bugs.
- Fixed the "runtime error 6 'overflow'" problem on the Migration History screen that happened when any migrations that occurred after mid-day December 2, 2005 were accessed.
- Fixed the auto-decline bug that locked the dungeon editor whenever a challenge was automatically declined due to an invalid dungeon.

Version 2.2.4
(4/15/05)
We went through two updates tonight.  So, at the end of the evening, we're now at 2.2.4 for the current "play" version of the game.

Very few things you'll see in this version as most of the work this week was focused on changing some data processing on the server end, and making the corresponding changes to the data structures being sent by the client.

The display problems with Game History should be taken care of with this version.  The Player 2 game notes are now being displayed properly.  (They were being stored ok all along, just not getting displayed right.)  And the problem that sometimes reversed the homeland colors for some games in the history tables has been corrected.

And, hopefully, some of the server problems we've had in the last couple of weeks were addressed tonight.

Version 2.2.1 / 2.2.2
(3/24/05)
It took too updates tonight to get this one right.  (Don and & I are a bit rusty at this quick release schedule - and will need a little practice to refine our process.)  This is the first update using the "new and improved" version of the auto-update system installed in last weeks upgrade.  (The problems tonight weren't related to problems with the update system - but rather were "operator errors" that we'll hopefully avoid in the future.

There isn't much to be seen in the release for the free players - but members are going to be very excited about the new Game History features.  The huge data-base of games going back to 1999 are now accessible via the Game History interface.  (Oh, I almost forgot.  There is a "sales pitch" screen at the end of the free version.)

The "path" problem for the new "medium" spirit images being delivered from the web server was fixed tonight.  (This was only a problem for folks using a non-default install path - but it should work now for everyone.)
Version 2.2.0
(3/16/05)
This marks the biggest release in a long time.  The 2.2.0 release requires a new install since it include all the system files and foundation components for the total over-haul of both the client and server applications in the coming months.

While there are some "new look" screens that tease the coming facelift for the game client, the real "meat" of this release is all the things you won't see - but that provide the necessary components to begin migrating in all of the new technology and things I learned working on Power Politics last year.
Version 2.0.7
(4/20/03)
This is primarily a maintenance release.  The 2.0 upgrade was pretty extensive in the variety of things it effected, and as a result there were a variety of things that needed tweaking, fixing and adjusting.  Here's a run down on what changed:
 - chat scroll bar fixed
- chat window "bounce" fixed
- Galley Slaves added back to free version
- Galley Slaves "legal limit" restored to 5
- Room count display list widened
- Practice room fixed in member version (no fatalities & records)
- Default dungeon should now be set for new players
- Corrupted map files repaired
- Odd activation problem at corner of map fixed.  (I hope!)
- Elite Guard's Axe removed from free version

Version 2.0.6
(4/8/03)
Short summary:  new spirits (including Lilith!), new chat front end that supports XP, NT, W2K and all the old 9x flavors of windows, a new update system, a variety of fixes and tweaks, and some underlying things that will come into play over the next few weeks.  Full Details on spirits and spirit Mods
Version 1.8.5
(5/24/01)
This is a pretty small release.  The three broken spirits are fixed (Apollo's Seamstress, Mounted Hunter and Alesean Harbor).  To make it worth the annoyance of an upgrade, I decided to do an early release of five new spirits from the next release set I'm working on.  Look for Mysterious Ruins, Mountain Lake, Turkish Den, Nubian Relic and the Armasi Armory.  (I've added a complete list of the Age of Alchemy Release Set #2 spirits.)
Version 1.8.4
(5/12/01)
Not surprising that with the number of new spirits and modifications in 1.8.3, we needed a minor patch to do a little adjusting and tweaking.  Also finished the debugging for the Art CD installation in this patch.  Here's a "modifications" page detailing the spirit adjustments and tweaks in this patch.  (Also, with the new in-game Spirit Gallery, I've changed the interface Gallery link to instead take everyone to the tournament menu page.)
Version 1.8.3 (5/3/01)

Well, this one was a long time coming, but I think everyone will be quite pleased.  First, you'll find over 40 new Age of Alchemy spirits included with this release.  The long-awaited "practice mode" is now working.  Games played in the old "trading" room now are "free" games.  No won-loss records (or rating) is kept and there are no fatalities or migrations for games played in this room.

We also spend several weeks reviewing all existing spirits and made a number of modifications and adjustments.  See the "modification" document for a detailed listing of these changes.
Version 1.8.2 Somehow, the changes in this release never got documented.  Guess its a little late now to worry about that.
Version 1.8.1
(6/17/00)
This version removed the WON.net logs from the game and physically moved the "free version" server off of WON.net's hardware and onto its new home in the Kellogg Creek Software offices here in Portland.  (And yes, before you send me emails, I am well aware that the game client - and web site - still includes dozens of references to WON; and those will be removed from the game in the next upgrade and from the web site as fast as I can work my way through all of the pages.)

You have probably already noticed that you can also see the chat rooms (and player counts) for both versions.  Members can see how many people are currently connected to the free version, and visa versa.  The new room (TheOffice) that you see is a private meeting area for our online staff.  It actually isn't new, but we decided that there were times it might be helpful for players to know that there were moderators or helpers online who might not currently be available.

There was one spirit modification in this upgrade.  As per repeated requests by players, the Venal Governor now has a maintenance cost of 2 points.

This version also introduced some changes to the spirit population in the free version.  The new shared population contains 300 spirits.  The following spirits were removed from the free version:

Flatlands: Apulian Lancers, Coliseum, Cupid's Arrow, Exorcism, Hadrain's Wall, Hannibal's Elephants, Spyglass, Supply Wagon
Drylands: Bedouin Scouts, Desert Jackals, Drylands Bastion, Drylands Shaman, Flaming Wall, Magic Carpet, Persian Waterwheel, War Chariot
Woodlands: Animal Friendship, Boring Beetles, Clinging Vines (2), Elven Blades, Giant Spider Web, Mts. of the Moon, Numidian Badgers, Spotted Leopards, Wolf Pack
Wetlands: Atlantis Shaman, Barbarian Raiders, Fresh Mounts, Hot Springs, Isle of the Dead, Mjolnir, Sea Dragon's Lair, Sea Nymphs, Viking Pillagers
Darklands: Dark Brigade, Ghost, Ghouls, Nemisis, Sloth, Stygian Rats (2), Werewolf
Highlands: Athenian Phalanx, Dragon's Cave, Dwarven Keep, Light Chariot, Mountain Lions, Thracian Hounds (2), Thunder of Zeus
Version 1.8.0
(3/16/00)
A variety of little bug fixes in this one. In the Won version, the concede/edit dugeon bug should be gone.  The problem with spells (like An Eye for an Eye) ending a game and causing a problem appears to be taken care of. In the member version, the Parthian Warlord bug is fixed and Restoration now works properly.  (It no longer charges you 216 green energy points to cast it - but is back to the cost of 3 again.)
Version 1.7.8 (2/26/00) This fixed a couple of key bugs, and introduces one new feature.  The problem with some Rule Sets not working in tournaments has been fixed; and the pointer problem in the member version involving Dungeon 2 has been fixed.  The NewPlayers room in the WON.net version has a new feature: a Green Shirt helping teach a new player can now see the entire playing map.  This will be a big aid in giving new players advice and guidance as they learn the game.  (Credit to Wheels for coming up with this idea!)  NOTE: no league games can now be played in the NewPlayers room!
Version 1.7.7
(1/29/00)
The first SpiritWars patch of the Millennium!  Biggest thing here is the introduction of the new tournament system.  Also includes modifications to a few spirits.  These are documented in detail here.  We made a few adjustments in the WON.net spirit population (some of which effected the default dungeon).
Version 1.7.6
(12/6/99)
Nothing major in this one.  Just a variety of little bug fixes in the chat interface.
Version 1.7.5
(12/5/99)
No, you didn't miss anything.  1.7.4 was a testing release that didn't make general distribution.  This release marks the introduction of the new chat interface for the WON.net version.  Both versions of the game now use the same chat and match-making interface.  You'll also find that you need to create a new player account.  With all the confusion over lost WON.net names in the last two weeks, and some technical problems getting our world and their world talking to each other, we introduced our own player account system for the free version of the game.  (We'll see about moving back to the Won player account system after the holidays.)
Version 1.7.3 (11/11/99)

This is the "current" version of SpiritWars. Primary change in this build was fixing the reported bug that crashed the game when a player deleted the notes text and tried to exit the Game History screen.  This now works.
Version 1.7.2
(11/11/99)
Nothing any of you will see in this build.  I added some debugging tools to help me with a couple of players who have graphic cards that seem to be having a problem with the new Chat Room interface in the member version.  (If you're in this group, please contact me and we'll do some testing and see if we can figure out what is going on.)
Version 1.7.1
(11/11/99)
This version released the "new look" chat interface into the member's version of the game.  Other new features include a Game History log that records the results of every game played.   This chat interface will be replacing the current Won Gathering Place in the next couple of weeks. For a look at the chat interface and an explanation of the new features, visit the Chat Interface page at the web site.
Version 1.7.0 (11/11/99) This was a "transition version" of the game.  No one will ever actually play this version.  It was installed by the Won Auto-Update system and triggered the first file update via our new update system.  All future updates of the game will use our new file management system.
Version 1.6.0
(9/16/99)
Age of Alchemy: This release marks the beginning of the Age of Alchemy expansion era for SpiritWars.  Forty new spirits were introduced into the playing world.  It also included a major revision of the spirit population in the Won version of the game.  (This is the first update released via WON.net's Auto-Update system.
Version 1.5.0
(6/3/99)
Major Changes: With this release we are now officially out of the beta phase. The new install now includes WON.net's auto-update software that will allow users to download new patches by connecting to the WON version of the game. This makes it easier for us to distribute the patches and eliminates about a megabyte of overhead from our patches that used Install Shield. We've also enabled the option to install the game into the directory and/or hard drive of your choice.
