Synergistic Spirits

You know what synergy is, right? The sum is greater than the whole. This is often the case in SpiritWars, where two spirits are of limited value in their own right, but become very powerful when used together.

One of my favorite synergies is between Saxon Armorer and Willow Druids. The Armorer increases defense by +1 for any friendly combat spirit, while Willow Druids can heal 3 of any damage that spirit incurs. This allows you to create a powerhouse spirit with a large defense, which can be quite hard to defeat.

Another example of synergy is Magic Carpet and Supply Wagon. The Carpet increases the movement of any spirit by +2, but has the unfortunate side effect of increasing that spirit's maintenance by +3. But with good timing, you can cast the Carpet on a spirit and follow it with Supply Wagon, which reduces the move and maintenance cost of a friendly drylands combat spirit to 0.

So it is to your advantage to know the spirits in your population intimately. Understand where the various synergies exist, and take advantage of those synergies when you build your dungeon.

The colors themselves are designed to be synergistic. Flatlands and drylands go well together. Darklands and highlands are natural allies. Woodlands and wetlands make a powerful combination. Often you will find spirits which benefit spirits of another color. For example, Elven Blades (a woodlands spirit) can increase the movement of any friendly wetlands combat spirit by +1. Create dungeons that capitalize on these natural synergies.

Not to say that exceptions don't exist. You might want to try another combination to overcome the limitations of a particular color. For example, highlands spirits are usually strong, but they move slow and have poor vision. Woodlands spirits are less strong, but they move fast and have excellent vision. You might put a few woodlands spirits into your highlands dungeon, to give you the valuable vision and movement you need.

The key is to know your spirits inside and out, and find a combination that will make the most of what you have.
