Strategic Blocking Defenders and energy spirits are special, because you don't have to activate them right next to your castle. They can be placed anywhere on the map next to a friendly spirit. An accomplished player knows how to use this attribute to his advantage. ![]() For example, let's say you are trying to get past that second move Roman Legion (move range=1) with your Barbarian Raiders (move range=2). Try placing an energy spirit on the wetlands hex. You can then jump to the woodlands hex and attack his castle. ![]() The energy you just placed will block him from moving next to you, and you won't have to worry about being attacked this turn.
Another good example is the activation of spirits next to your opponent's castle. Here, you have some Nile Crocodiles to the southeast of the gold castle. Fortunately, you have a Drylands Fort (defender) and a Stone Obelisk (energy) in your courtyard. Try placing the Drylands Fort in the Highlands space, then place the Stone Obelisk in the Drylands space. ![]() Now your opponent will be unable to activate any spirits in those two locations. This buys you valuable time to take your opponent's castle apart, before he can build an effective defense. Many of the special maps in the game restrict where you can travel, through the use of deep water and cursed terrain. Use this to your advantage as well. If an opponent is trying to move toward your castle, block his route with a well-placed spirit, such as a Woodlands Maze. It can take several turns to hack through such a defense, allowing you to disperse some combat in that direction for when your opponent breaks through. |
